Preparing the Mind
They told me she would die.
I heard that last in dream. But
then she died.
She had written me poems and songs
that filled kind hearts heavenly, earthly;
even trees and plants learnt
by heart those passionate lines.

She was prepared for eternity,
her face calm like a still pond,
her wrinkles erased as pencil marks from paper,
her clothes as bride on her wedding morning;

this was butterfly with broken wings
chopped off by pitiless gecko,
this was dove mauled by desperate fangs
of a famished cat.

Walking her garden this morning
I found her necklace lost in storm
the week before her body and mine wept,
she drove away dreams
but the wind carries yet her fragrance
with wings of gold
I wish I could draw these colours
on her chest or grave
as I sit looking at the night, dreaming, dreaming
