After Christmas

After Christmas.

I was born in this room

Changed now but familiar

The fireplace made redundant

By the gurgling radiators

still stood stubbornly waiting

for the crackle of logs

and the smell of wood smoke

Memories come easy

in these dog December days

Church bells at evensong

A cackle of Crows in the high Elms

Sheep fat with new life

gossiping in the nursery pastures

and Mother singing Si mi chiamano mimi

I cross to the window

Looking out to the unchanging

view of my childhood

Soft in the after light of day

Thinking of the New Year

that will capture the sunset of my youth

And set my starting line to middle age

Simon proposed for the third time

At the dance in October

Married life and family at Long Acre

But the crush of my dreams

I pressed my nose to the windowpane

As the moon gathered small clouds,

my tears set the night wind flying.

Authors note.

A poem from the feminine view, it seemed to suite the content better.
