Hand guns, shotguns, rifles for hunting, sure......NOBODY hunts with or protects their homes with a Bushmaster assault rifle. It's ridiculous to defend their wholesale sales across the nation...I would like to ask someone who owns one of these blasters why they think they might need one. Nobody is going to destroy their own home, spitting three hundred rounds per second against a burglar. It's INSANE!!!...len

Follow up to my comment:
Yes I agree we need gun control absolutely but with all of these
young men from Virginia Tech, to Gabe Gifford's shooting, to Aurora and now
so tragically in Newton were know to have mental health problems.
Nothing about their conditions were hidden for any of them as they
spoke in great detail on social media or to their doctors and even their
parents were concerned about what they might want to do. I think
perhaps people were afraid to help for free of branding those young men
as crazy for life. But these young men have chemical in balances which
is not their fault, that with the correct treatment and medication could
save them and all those they had killed. People ask why there are so
many more homeless people since the 80's, well Regan and others wanted
to cut costs and save money so they released all the patients who had
been deemed by the courts and doctors as not able to care for themselves from mental
heath facilities but the true cost was and is still human lives. 60%
-70% of the permanently homeless people have mental health issues which
prevent them for caring for themselves. If those young men had been made to seek treatment I truly believe all of the above mentioned tragedies would have been prevented.
Yes we need an assault weapons BAN but it's just one piece of the pie to solve the problem. Because as a Nation, as a people we must and need to be a one that cares for those who can't care for themselves.

America is in how it treats its weakest members: the elderly, the
infirm, the handicapped, the underprivileged, the unborn.”
"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." Mahatma Gandhi.
"You measure the degree of civilization of a society by how it treats its weakest members.” Winston Churchill.

Though I agree no one really needs an assault weapon and a ban is needed, these young men really need mental health treatment. The kid from Aurora
was practically screaming it from the roof I am going to kill people and the Gabe Gifford kid as well. Why aren't the mental health professional who were treating them, have them committed? Force them to stay on there drugs with court ordered random drug testing, but testing for their prescriptions. The bigger picture is that this really a mental health crisis with these young men.

what our forefathers understood, and what is lost in translation now, is that when the people give the government and bureaucracies the sole right to yoeld the higher tier weaponary, you allow a window for tyranny. It is a rather "unspoken" part of the checks and balances of a free state... do not. . .my fellow countrymen and women. . .allow the media to persuade you into adopting a mindset without first knowing the facts, and acknowledging the bigger picture. I beg of you all, research

Though I agree that every citizen has the right to protect his family and property, there hasto be an end put to this spate of random and needless violence that has swept our nation. The NRA is a powerful lobby in Washington and we will soon see if our president has the courage to stand up to them. Henry

I'm sure Mr. Heston would say: If there were someone there with a rifle it wouldn't have happened. People who believe in owning guns and rifles will always believe it. I'm sure the NRA would back up Mr. Heston no matter what. It's a total tragedy and I'm sure they'll be others.

Yeah, the NRA was Charlton Heston's baby for years, it was justified by the First Ammendment, where it stated that we had the right to keep and bear arms. Something went terribly wrong, Bill, we're in the end times. Well done.
