The Empty Trophy
Author's Notes:
The recent news of the use of performance enhancing drugs in cycle races on a long term and sustained basis by Americas top cycle champion and 7 time winner of the Tour de france Lance Armstrong. caused me to wonder just how the beaten competitors felt after devoting a large part of their lives to attaining their dreams. How does the so called champion feel knowing all his successes are just foul hollow victories? I was staggered to discover many Americans don't even know about this yet it was the top news story in Europe. Is cheating in sport now so endemic it doesn't even make the news anymore? A recent poll even suggests his popularity rating has not gone down!

The Empty trophy.

When men compete and give their all
And strive to play the game
They train from dawn to darkness fall
Then they train again.

Their family’s and lives on hold
For years they strive to win
Through summer heat and winters cold
That fire still burns within.

Then comes the line to end it all
The finish, the cheers on high
Yet muscles scream and hopes now fall
As the champion flashes by.

There he stands to rapturous applause
The champ, the man, the king!
And you just hide your pain of course
And of his praises sing.

Yes he is the unrivaled champion
For others there is no hope
How does it feel Mr Armstrong?
As you inject that vial of dope.

He even has an heroic name...Lance Armstrong...Sounds like a cmic book hero...The fact that he was able to pass all those drug tests shows how the atheletes are staying ahead of the curve in the dope detecting game. We will never know again whether a chamion is a true champion again. All sports have been tainted...len

Was all over the news in South Africa as well. He lied and defrauded so many people. It is a shame the consequences, except financially, is not so harsh.

I hadn't heard about this deplorable practice.  But it doesn't surprise me.  Most people, like my mother used to say, aren't worth the paper they're printed on.  A shameful example exposed in a strong and well-constructed poem.  --David
