There They Lie. Poppy
There they Lie.

Tommy stood with gun in hand

Upon Armistice Day

The silence he didn’t understand

His comrades all gone away.

He spoke softly to his sergeant

"Have we won sarge? Have we won”?

"Yes we’ve won my lad” the sergeant said

"Yes we’ve won, my son”.

"But where are all my mates sarge?

Have they gone, have they gone”?

Sarge gestured to the poppy fields

"There they are son, every bloody one.

But we won”.

Absolutely beautiful.  Tender.  Vivid.  Clear.  Honest.  Full of irony and feeling.  --David
