I envy that generation whom Returned from Europe to a new America. A generation whose Clothes of optimism and hope were torn off with Claws of decay and decline. A generation who stood naked and shattered, Quivering hand straining for support, Only to find rusted shards of machinery. A generation expected to lift itself up by bloody bootstraps, Look past horrors of modern war, Ignore the emotional and social desert, Frolic in infertility.   I envy that group who First tasted mustard gas. I envy that group who Scattered like pollen from the flower and Never came to rest in fertile ground. I envy that group of Americans who Lost their identity, Their sanity, Their feelings. That group who returned home, Unable to speak, Unable to walk; Crippled by the barbed wire middles, The ironclad monsters, The magmatic fields of fire and steel. That group who entered the waste land and Returned home wasted and dead.   I envy that group of Americans, Not for their glory; A glory that has scurried under desert sands And hidden from the scorching sun. I envy them nor for their love; A love that has not died, but now looks inward.   This jealousy that burns my heart Like the embers on German fields, Does not stem from their unwavering patriotism, nor their trust in one another, nor their nave faith which Has since been placed in coffins, nailed shut, and buried.               I envy the Lost Generation not for these reasons.             Nor any so bold.             I envy the Lost Generation for their name.
