WE ARE THE NINETY-NINE PERCENT
b’’h

WE ARE THE NINETY-NINE PERCENT!

For corporate castles crowned in greed,
There is no way to pay the rent —
Except by robbing those in need;
We are the ninety-nine percent!

In gilded gates that guard the way
To hallowed halls — we’ve made no dent —
Yet funded them our hard-earned pay;
We are the ninety-nine percent!

Wake up! wake up! O woeful world!
And face the force, the fierce intent —
Of they forsake our flag unfurled;
We are the ninety-nine percent!

For tyranny who’s paid the cost?
We live in neither house nor tent —
And who the homeless, tempest-tossed?
We are the ninety-nine percent!

Whose land is this? Whose times have changed?
Whose power and glory will be spent
To keep the order pre-arranged;
We are the ninety-nine percent!

Tho’ things are seldom what they seem,
Our mission’s clear — our good intent:
We are the world — we have a dream —
We are the ninety-nine percent!

Gene directed me to this wonderful poem, David. Just a stunning piece of poetry with a heads-up message to us all. Don't think I didn't notice that every line rhymes. I have done this many times, and I can testify that it ain't easy...Great stuff, buddy...The top 1% can buy their way into the game, but the people ultimately hold all the cards. We must NEVER forget that....Yer pal, len

This is one of your best poems I have read, David, and that means it's truly fantastic. The message is clear, and one that 'ninety-nine percent' readers can relate to. The alternate rhyme scheme and the tetrameter lines enhance the quality of this piece. And the audio teaches the reader exactly how to read out a poem written in iambic verse. Well done!

David, thank you for republishing this great work. I also join Tina as well as others, and the unity and solidarity will be the concrete answer to those, who overstepped their lines, ruining the lives of the billions i.e. the ninety-nine percent. Let's hope the great efforts our brave brothers will be appreciated by the mass, producing an exit rout to the  crisis. May your great works continue to inspire us.

David, A powerful statement, but a question to your wonderful poem.  Why are the 99% suffering, why is the 99% not voting?  I don't at all condone anarchy, but if this were years of old there would be a war.  We need to vote, we need to have compassion for others. We have to stop being tricked by the 1% year after year.  They make it so we are constantly fighting over precious resources we need to survive.  In order that we will always be a divided nation.  A terrific poem.  Keep them coming.  Love Tina

I believe you are right, but it worries me that we have come to this.  If the ninety-nine percent win, what do we lose?  I agree with you that things need to change, but it has already been proven that in a world of greed, socialism loses ... and whether we call it that or not ... that is what will be the result.  We have given up far too much of what we take for granted to be our "rights," to sit and let the ninety-nine percent give the rest of our way of life away in the name of equal sharing among the masses.  Now that I have said it, please make me wrong because we Have Got To Change.  I just don't believe the ninety-nine percent has the answer.  They have the determination, but not the solutions.  Anyone can scream, "This isn't right."  But I see no concrete answers that solve the problem.  None that I would want to live with anyway.

True words here, man, well done. In your last stanza, you say we are the world....remember that song? Well, in lieu of the way this world has been going, that reminded me of a t-shirt I once saw, many years ago, just after that song came out. On it, there was the world, with a big mushroom cloud above it and the words "We were the world" Can you dig it? You're right, Fireman, we are the ninety nine percent.
