Dancing Flames

My eyes gaze through a golden heat
as thoughts go far away.
Cold, damp drafts flow down my back.
I await the break of day.

Right now I see the growing flames
of gold and red and blue,
arising from the smoking wood
giving camp a sundry hew.

Near around the campfire’s light
asylum quells my fear
of unseen eyes within the night
behind a blackened sheer.

Flames dance tall above the coals,
but dance with waving grace,
intermingling with each other;
To live and then replace.

What is beyond the firelight’s glow
that contorts my solemn mood,
of nature’s burning beauty
standing innocent … standing nude?

Nothing is there in black filled night
unseen by light of day,
it’s just unseen and worries the soul,
causing thoughts to play.

Author's Notes:

I love camping
and sitting around the campfires
at night.

Excellent in your description, and I enjoyed the use of color in the formatting to further the imagery immensely. A very cool idea. Fear of the unknown though, that I didn't expect to see.
