What the Heck is Wrong With Girls?

What the heck is wrong with girls?

They’re crazy

I’m not one

Never

At least not one of the ones I see everyday

In preschool

My friends were boys

They were easy

Friendly and pure

Girls were snobs

They look for reasons not to like you

They’ll talk to you if they’re alone

But once you approach them in a group

It’s as if you’ve never met

And trust me

If the girls they’re with don’t want to meet you

They won’t

They’ll make sure of it

They’ll make sure any introductions are disregarded

But if you find one on her own

And you strike up a conversation

It won’t be long before it’s not just about you and her

Suddenly it’s about everybody

She’ll want to talk about everybody

Anybody that she has a thought on

Listing off all those reasons she found not to like them

And she’ll wait

To hear you agree

But what if you don’t agree?

What if you don’t care about everybody else?

What if you have no observations to share?

No unique reasons to hate everyone else

In that case, you are not her friend

And as soon as you’re seen with that girl she loves to hate,

All her friends that will share in the hate

Will never be your friend again

Just like that

Now that you’re not their friend,

You have become the target

A big, fat, easy one

They’ll start with a shot to the leg

Immobilize you

Embarrass you

Make sure you’re not about to get away

And then they start to pluck your feathers

One by one

Laughing at each tug

Relentlessly until you’re left there

On the ground

Naked

Freed from every secret or habit you’ve ever hid behind

Freed from ever again being expected to fit in

When you’re laying there in your nakedness

You have a few directions you can go

You can hide behind a sheet

Hide your nakedness and try to make up for your past habits

Design your new coat of feathers

Feathers that coordinate more with everyone else’s’

Or you can move on

Embrace that freedom that they bestowed upon you

Love your bare body for what it is

Stripped away from all delusions

And find others who love it as well

You can find the other naked birds

The ones who aren’t girls or boys

The ones who don’t care about everyone else

The ones who can talk about themselves and each other

I was never born to be a girl

I’m a bird

Everyone else just helped me realize it

This is very powerful, and I identify with it so much.  I love the use of metaphor, and the flow is gripping and intense.  This is definitely going on my favorites.

I know it may not represent the whole spectrum of the poem but I felt this tidbit was the most important thing as I read. How incredibly hard it is to achieve this seemingly simple ideal. Accepting yourself and perhaps alienating your "friends" at the time... Excellent message to spread in my opinion.
