In shadow walks the Ghost who stole her name,
While Germany sleeps quiet all around,
Until her glass ears bleed for want of sound;
The cold and lonely air still tastes of shame.
Her shimmer snaps into and out of frame―
I long to press myself against the ground,
Handfuls of dust to blunt the edge I've found:
The void I thought had emptied since she came.
In dim-lit rooms of cotton, oil, and steel,
With little left behind to bear her mark,
This empty land denies that she was real,
And swallows down the years our lives left dark.
In shadow walks the Ghost who stole her name;
I cannot hate her now. We are the same.

Author's Notes:
Someday I'm going to accept the fact that she's gone.
