I'm just a man
A simple man
Trying to get on by
I walk down the street
I look into peoples eyes
As the world passes them by
The money we have
Is spent somewhere else
They are people
Just simple people
Trying to live life
They live on the streets
Spend time in shelters
Asking for spare change
People in cold houses
That have no money for heat
Because they have some mouths to feed
They starve or they freeze
Because people just look on by
Give some money to here
Give some money to their
But how about the mouths to feed
Right in our backyard
Give money to Haiti
Give money to Africa
Give money to all these places
To help them live better
Our friends
Our neighbors
Our families
What is wrong with people these days
Do they not see?
The suffering faces
The crowded shelters
Food pantries that need help
Jobs are being cut
Our economy is still in need
We have things we need
Local mouths to feed
Hungry people in need

Author's Notes:
Just a little something.  The disaster in Haiti was horrible.. But so much money was raised to help Haiti while people closer to home suffer.
If multi millions can be raised to help Haiti and doctors are willing to work for free their.. Why can't multi millions be raised and food given to the people in our own backyard?

I completely agree. Lets save our neighbor and destroy our brother is how it feels these days. Remember as I will too, it may not seem like you or I only can make a difference but we can and do. I really liked this write and I completely hear and understand. Always Maggie.

You make a good point, people are people and many close by need assistance too. Perhaps the government or agencies that raise funds for disaster relief step up when it is sudden because of the magnitude of the destruction that has occured all at once. If they supported everyone on the streets of the USA or Canada I wonder if there would be more and more people just giving up and going for this kind of aid. Our government has aid for people who are not able to work or are in between jobs. Perhaps the solution is not in developing a program to give money/food/shelter to the homeless...but to develop a system that gives these provisions to those that want to take them with the goal of getting a job in mind. One thing I cannot understand though is why some of these homeless people don't want to live in a home...if approached to be taken off the street to live with family or whatever they say NO. It is a complex situation indeed. Good work Scott...we could do more but I'm just not sure what would work for a long term solution.
