All of Me
Can you love the child within me
Though damaged from the pain
Can you comfort me in sure arms
To build me up again
Can you dry teardrops as they fall
Although there will be more
In quiet understanding ways
Not knowing what they're for

Can you love the girl within me
With giggles, fun, and jest
The one who stays more constantly
More playful than the rest
Can you love my wanton silliness
So full of impulse wild
I'm happiest when she appears
An escape from the child

Can you love me as a young adult
Who grew from error and trial
The product of an equal mix
Of the girl and the child
Can you step back to a different time
When life was still carefree
Of days bursting with promises
Free of responsibility

Can you love the woman I am now
A sum of all the rest
To cherish me exclusively
With truth and tenderness
Can you love me even though
I sometimes pull away
I will be yours whole heartily
When sunshine conquers gray

Can you love me despite changes
Of time and place and age
And moments when my former trials
Holds my weary soul hostage
Can you realize my strong needs
Devotion, passion, plus
Can you build a strong foundation
That is firmly set with trust

Can you love me in the golden years
When beauty will take flight
When time demands my youthful glow
When old age is my plight
Can you love me to the final end
Of all our days on earth
Can you look at all of me
And see a love of worth

Can you

You really captured the whole package here Barbs. We are all these things combined and it is a very pertinent question to ask of anyone who desires to be in our lives.
It flowed beautifully to the final.

This is an incredible poem.  Great questions, that we all should ask before we waste too much time with someone.   They are questions we could ask ourselves too.  Is this a person, that I could share  all of the good times, bad times, good health, bad health, or will I grow bored of their ways after a couple of decades?  Best to take time to figure out answers to these questions before making a big leap.

With no hesitation I extend my arms to hug the child…with wanting I reach out my hand to stroke the soft hair of a young woman…with a deep understanding I put my arms around the woman you are today and pull you close.
