Altruism is a Thankless Job
Reach out your hand
Just to pull me in below
This time you've gone too far
This time I just don't know

And it's so damn rare
I sink this fast in rescue
I'm not the one who's hurting
I'm not the one who hurts you

The time has come that this falls apart
Shotty construction begins to show form
Your foundation weathered with ill logic
Hardly enough to protect from the storm

Paint me wrong for trying to rebuild you
Chastise me and act as if I killed you
But you're killing me with this new rage
Let's erase and rewrite it on a new page

Overdose of undertow
Understanding overreaction
I can't believe where you went
Calm mind to a distraction

You crash and burn
And escape the horror scene
You don't realize what I feel
You don't know what I mean

The line is drawn, visible to your eyes
The storm dies out and you open the door
Again I reach out my hand and you deny
Confusion lingers, I can't stand any more

Just an aspiring shrink with no real help
Expect me to read your mind with no help
I offer my surrender to the war you wage
Let's erase and rewrite on another page

And your book is shut
Do it all alone
Do it altruistically
Do it hedonistically

But my book is open
I won't accept this
I won't tolerate this
I won't defend this

But you just might end this.
