SOMETHING THERE IS OF A BROKEN HEART
Something there is of a broken heart that doesn't want to mend; something that resists healing. Time, the great persuader, does its part and, with distance, seems to cloud the issue of pain now and then much like morphine puts away conscious recognition for a time until its effects wear off and you're left with an untreated severed limb.

Parts and pieces of pain seem to drift away till the memory is no longer whole and recall becomes inaccurate. Anger certainly plays a role. The heart that's broken wants to call the perpetrator back for still more interrogation, more accusation, to throw things, to scream.

Sunshine and laughter are anathema. It shrinks in horror from comfort. Depression feels more appropriate.

Of all the times in life when one should not be left alone, the time of the broken heart is king. Yet, its very existence proves one is left alone.

Something there is of a broken heart that wants to hide itself and weep.

My favourite part of this is where you say "Parts and pieces of pain seem to drift away till the memory is no longer whole..." This is the crux of such situations. If we are to remember someone fully and properly, we have to remember the pain they have caused us too, but the pain of the memory is too much, so it's easier to push all memory of the person away, until and unless you can renew the relationship so that friendship, if not, in time, love can be regained. Those who have been through such times will recognise the situation you describe here. Well done, Mary Lou.

ML....when I read this my mind immediately went to that time and the one who broke my heart...i don't think he as much broke my heart, but the situation broke us both I think. I was never the same and even today after many many years...the wound is still fresh and tender. I have yet to ever feel as down, broken and wanting to evaporate as I did in those hours, days, weeks, months and years of my loss. As sad as this is to read and remember, you write with such knowledge, tenderness and open heart; it will go to my faves. You, Ms Mary Lou Allen are an incomparable treasure to this site. The finest of writes and souls.
Love,
Cindy

If that doesn't sum up every aspect of what I have felt, I don'tknow what else could. This was indeed the definition of great, to me. I appreciate you for it...

Beautiful, kid....When expectations aren't met, pain is the result. As they say of broken hearts and kidney stones, "This too shall pass."....len

Ahhh, it is the glory of the breaking.  So many emotions come to the surface and still - life goes on.  Self worth and knowing love is never given in vain can help the healing but it is a path of healing that needs be taken.

Personally, I hate a broken heart because it just hurts and it simply sucks.

and as you said, that is the long and the short of it.  Always a pleasure to read your prose.  ~Pamela

ML this touched my soul...and my heart cringed from the remembered pain that it suffered from the times it's been broken...Can't bear to think of another person feeling that sort of pain and loss...

Very well written...very sad write.

Hugs...and hope all is looking brighter now...

Oh yes....ably put.
I think a broken heart is the most grievous of injuries and not easily mended, that's for sure.

Dear ML...My heart is saddened by the forthright words that you have written on this poem of broken hearts....Let time chip the tiny pieces until they disappear into the ethers....My dear friend, let the warmth of beautiful memories fade to aid the heart to heal...Well written, but so tearful for me....
Love, Maggie.......

Dear Mary Lou:  this is so concise and truthful.  So much to set into the right order and just walk away from.
