That Was Me

Remember when the sky was blue,
And tiger lilies gaily grew
Around the sunny porch we knew?
My sister, where were you?

When tomcat leaped upon the stair
To catch the string hung in the air,
And Mother’s eyes were free of care—
My sister, were you there?

When spring came and the air was clear
And birds all twittered far and near
The song that followed every year;
My sister, could you hear?

The times I wished that you would go;
The moments when I loved you so;
My dreams as we played in the snow—
My sister, did you know?

When you pause now and look behind,
Do you regret when you weren’t kind?
The dream you followed, deaf and blind,
My sister, did you find?

Do you recall your fantasy—
Someone to love you faithfully?
When you look back, why can’t you see:
My sister, that was me.
Author's Notes:
For my sister.  We've long since understood each other better, and I love her so.

I can see how you are a stickler for rhyme and meter.  How refreshing for an old rulebreaker like myself to read such perfection.  Touching and beautiful.  I will be back to read more as time allows.

I love this poem!  You have written with such tender words.   Every line is filled with sweet memories and questions from the heart.  You make me think and question if i am a true friend to my sisters...
