All You Wanted Was Me
all you wanted was me
but i protested, i have so much more to give!
you never wanted greeting cards with playful voices
nor were you searching for spiritual light.
all you wanted was me
to follow you into your ritualistic journey,
your once-a-week visit with God.
when you went into treatment...
all you wanted was me
to leave you alone
not even a friend's voice could rouse you
from the invading poison of the treatment drug.
you challenged,  all your other friends promised
to leave you alone, why couldn I?
I dont know how to play this role
I've never had a friendship that depended
on non-communication for survival.
all you wanted was me
to be shielded from your anger
induced by that so-called healing drug.
you might imagine it a kindness to me
but i've seen wrath before and
I've endured a bigger storm...why would i fear
an honest cry for help although tainted
by acrid words not meant to hurt?
all i wanted was you
to take my one extended hand
but dont you know, i would have given both
if it would have helped exchange your lonely hours
for ones that sing with endurance?
all you wanted was me
to be like your only true friends
who turned their back on you and
let you  "go it alone"
but now they are gone...and so am I...
is that what you really wanted?

You placed your hurt on every line. Sunny finds a smiley face. Smile.

This is so honest...and so emotionally profound that I am moved.

Touched a nerve, wrenched a gut and played on my heartstrings gifted writer~

I sense so much heartache in this, lamenting the lost opportunity to be allowed to give someone you cared for some comfort. This is truly beautifully written.  Henry
