Pick and Choose
You've seen the me that hides away
Inside a spun cocoon of gray:
The child that cries and rails at fate,
The parts of me that hurt and hate.
Yet still you fail to see my soul,
For want of taking as a whole
The other things of which I'm made―
The parts for which I could not trade.
I choose to face you as I will,
And not to let my feelings spill;
That does not mean they are not there.
That does not mean I do not care.
So you would rather see me cry
Than have me able still to try?
So you would tell me I'm not here
Because I do not show my fear?
I've never lived without this wall,
Foundation stones that cannot fall,
All that I've yearned and slaved to be―
My masks are also part of me.
And if you would reject me now,
For trying as I best know how,
Demanding hand, despising glove . . .
Perhaps it isn't me you love.
Author's Notes:
It's not really wise -- or possible -- to be in love with a dissociative person if you can't accept dissociation as part of them.  Just a thought.

another skillfully written poem with perfect phrasing.
Your poems are delightful to read...deep and meaningful made all the more enjoyable by the care you take in the writing...something sadly lacking here too often.
