Renaissance
I found a tree across the road from here,
All strangled in the winter atmosphere,
And coated with a gleaming glass veneer;
But hiding in between mud-brown and clear,
A tiny snatch of green had chance to peer.

I lost imagination at the sight,
Not thinking yet in terms of wrong and right―
Just wondering that freezing could not blight
That new-green peek that stood its ground to fight;

Then summer came to me that winter eve,
A shining warmth no senses could perceive,

And branching out across that bright expanse
Were praying leaves and tendrils locked in dance,
And reaching climax in their first romance.

It wasn't long before they budded new:
They pressed against glass cages and on through,
Escaping towards the unknown hitherto,
And blossoming at last as me and you.
