For Want of Me
If I should fade, and quietly go dark,
And into twilight take my searching heart,
When will it be my memories depart?
When will the days that turn by cease to mark
The time it's been since dimming took my spark;
And when, my love, will you forget my part,
And finish what my dreaming could not start
When, freed at last from fetters, you embark?
No, there is not a dawn in eastern skies
To light the hidden questions in your eyes.
Until you find the answers, I will stay,
And fade so slowly you may never turn―
Make peace so true that you may never yearn
For want of me, when I have gone away.
Author's Notes:
The reasons why I wrote this one are complicated; mostly they come down to being afraid of hurting the ones I love.  Line 9 is borrowed from Edwin Arlington Robinson's 'Luke Havergal'.

very beautifully and elegantly written. I enjoyed your words, you kept the flow and rhyme effortless.  i can feel the fear in these words..."If I should fade..." love how that theme is kept with "dimming", "fade so slowly", etc...the idea of burning out, not being available.   beautiful lines in this.
