Learn To Listen
the piano is old and rusted,
nothing but you and the stage.
the fallen sheet music is adjusted,
as you revert your eyes to the page.
you seem awake with luminessent grace.
accompanying yourself,
waiting for a returning face,
to redeem herself.
one request echoes in the hall.
but you know it's a trick in your mind.
the song bouces off the resisting walls
as you leave emptiness behind.
now the stage is captivated by blinding lights
the gold-red seats filled by anticipation and applause.
this one chance to fill all those empty nights
this one moment to rename your flaws
tonight they will see you as their daughter
tonight they will be proud
tonight they might not know who you are
but who they want you to be is singing out loud
sing your heart out
they will never hear you
tell them to listen
they will never listen
they choose to be deaf
and when you become what they want
they will consider you a miracle
they will consider you their daughter.
