The Caged Bird

I watch Eyes pry into this locked up hell

They’ll do anything to snatch a cruel glance.
The cool breeze waits to lift my tattered wings
and I try to lift my broken chant to the sky.
I bite to let them see my frustration

For I am locked in this cage all day.
This cage is made of glistening gold

With numerous bells and clasps.

I had once silken feathers of a rainbow
and behind me flowed a long majestic tail.
And when I sang my chorus into the sky
Soothing winds would call to me in response.
I was forced to lose many faithful friends
as my beauty was too much of a tempt.
Every human wanted to capture me,
and one day my peaceful slumber was broken.
Rough hands pulled out my feathers,
While In the struggle I felt my leg snap.

So I'm now in this cage meant for a queen,

Except I look anything but royal.
I have a limp that saddens me everyday

All the while my rough feathers turn greyer.
I know I am trapped as bars intrude my sight,
and I just wish the winds to carry me home.

I long to hear my melody chorus to the land,
where my friends and I will laugh and play.
For my beauty will be transformed back to me
and I shall never be cruelly captured again.
I dream to have my majestic tail follow me
with my rainbow feathers even more like silk.
I am trying to see what I did so wrong,
but I fear I will never be able to fly free again.
