The Gift

The Gift

Our tomorrows lay before us like a wrapped gift.

We’ve one gift per day, as through this life we drift.

And we don't yet know what's inside.

So we hope for the best and in fate we confide.

And exactly how many tomorrows there are is unknown.

But when tomorrow becomes today, we will be shown.

All of our yesterdays are in our toy box stored away.

We can take them out whenever we want to play.

As today’s gift we now slowly reveal.

Let no one, your dreams for tomorrow, steal.

I try to view each new day as a special event.

And I choose to call today’s gift, the "PRESENT".

It's amazing how poets inspire each other! Your poem reminded me of that poster a dear friend of mine had. It was on her wall and it read: "Every day is a special gift, that's why we call it the Present!" There was another poster my other friends had, with a poem about God by Helen Mallicoat (i hope I spelled the last name right...), I don't remember the whole poem, only the beginning: "I was regretting the Past and fearing the Future; suddenly my Lord was speaking: My name is I AM..."

Sometimes when I am completely drained of smiles I read your poems.....they always seem to give me a few back-ups, lol.  This is beautiful and inspiring, keep them coming.

Yeah!!! But what about those people who are so impatient to know what the future is hiding for them in this gift? What tomorrow brings into their life?

I am the very impatient type who wants everything to go fast and who wants to know all things at one time, the known and the unknown!!! This poem showed me that no matter how much I fuss and fret, I will never know tomorrow until tomorrow becomes the present. So, I say to myself: "patience! things will be known when their time comes!" No wonder I wrote this "Patience" poem! LOL!!! I wrote it to teach myself patience and now your poem taught me, too.

A truly inspirational poem, Ham. Thanks for writing it.
