He says he has found God at last.
And just when he needed God most.
But I wonder - was he not perhaps
Simply facing the wrong way all this time?
Or did God, instead of walking
Behind him as He had done up till then,
Run ahead of him, some life years,
Clearing his road of awkward obstacles,
And keeping an eye on him from afar,
Until he had circumnavigated
Enough of life’s globe to come to that place
Where God was waiting, and then he looked up,
Instead of staring at the impotent Earth?

Great job. It touches on one of my favorite subjects - God's Grace. I Think you have nailed it here. God's Grace is a gift that is ALWAYS there all anyone has to do is accept it.

This is amazing. I'm saving it to my favorites...

Well done, Peter.  Sure to spark some speculation.   I think you're right when you say that at the point at which he "looked up" he "found" God.  I believe that when things are going wrong, if we "turn the other cheek", which means to me turn around and face God, that He, or She, is there.  Nice work.  ML

Does circumstances influence when God is sought out?? I think so as when times are tough, that is when people seek Him most.
Do you find God or does He find you?
It appears you understand the workings of a good man (as the example you have written into your poem indicates) and who knows...perhaps you are right, God may indeed prepare the way life years ahead.

Well done Peter! =) Season's Greetings!
