Twinkling light
I woke up this morning it was Cristmas day
A cup of hot cocoa a slice of white bread
We stood by the table hands folded to pray
giving our blessings nothing more said
Seven children was more than a family could bear
money was tight there was nothing to spare
A Christmas tree was nowhere to be seen
No presents, no gifts, only a dream
A dress that was sewn by my mother's bare hands
A brand new pair of shoes to replace the old ones
This was the tradition we had in our home
A new dress and shoes to replace what was torn
The sunshine is bright
There's no snow on the ground
The weather is hot
There's flies all around
And as I walked to church that day
I thought of the candy the church gave away
to every little girl and boy
this was how my Christmas was filled with joy
And some postcards at church I did see
Santa clause next to a Christmas tree
Presents so beautiful wrapped in gold
Snow on the treetops it must be cold
I had never known Christmas that way
I never saw snow in which I could play
And the weather is hot, there's no air in the room
and the postcard has no flowers in bloom
And as I drifted deep in my head
I started to dream of what would be said
to all of my friends who would tell me their day
of presents and bright lights of Christmas their way
I'd tell them of presents that I did recieve
wrapped in gold under my tree
And how it was covered with one great big light.
And how it did twinkle and sparkle all night
And as I would tell them I know I'd believe
that the Christmas I dreamt was the one I recieved
So cherish those moments of Christmas each day
for not every child has Christmas that way

I always know when a poem is deserving of such an award... when I get goosebumps during and after reading it.  Congratulations.  The sadness is evident, although joy shines through.  Very well written.

Congrats on the award most deserving. Love costs nothing you have painted a beautiful image of the church you went to. Family love is more important than any present. Much love
