Tale of Terror
Whilst I sat upon my cushioned throne,
quenching the thirst of my ancient quill.
My ears were besieged by a wailing moan
that rattled my bones with its piercing chill.

“Tis just the wind caught in apple trees,”
I assured my fear-prickled skin.
“Nothing but autumn’s cool breeze,”
I swore to my wavering grin.

In returning my quill to its ink pot
my quaking hands missed their mark.
My masterpiece wore a black spot,
which colored my mood rather dark.

I reprimanded myself for being a fool.
Sidestepping shadows, I drew my drapes.
Locked out nights illuminating jewel,
and filled my chamber with dancing shapes

The eerie howling wove its way in,
extinguished my candle with the breeze it rode.
Its icy fingers caressed my bare skin.
Darkness enveloped my gilded abode.

My heart spoke in thunderous beats,
and drummed in my aching chest.
Sweat dripped down my face in sheets,
as I reached for the gold I possessed.

Gripped with terror I stumbled about,
the unseen predator close behind.
In a hoarse whisper I struggled to shout,
Fortune in hand, my limbs entwined.

Fear having robbed me of any strength,
I fell to the marble floor with a crash.
My treasure littered the corridors length,
Exhausted, I crawled amongst my stash.

Moving inch by inch seeking relief,
I cursed my castles massive size.
Death sat waiting to taste my grief,
unimpressed by my worldly supplies.

My time upon this earth was brief.
Wealth my comfortable disguise.
Greed had been the stalking thief,
that brought about my demise.

Don't really know where this came from...I deluded myself into thinking I could write a Poe like poem. LoL

Nicely prepared in a frighten since of horrifying detail how, "Greed had been the stalking thief, that brought about my demise."  Very cleverly disguised and very cleverly written - I loved the description of horror throughout and the irony of Greed turning to be the cause of it all!!!

As far as Poe - we can all be such a GREAT AMERICAN POET!

Very chilling. Reminded me of ghost stories around the camp fire, the ones that have a lesson in their haunt. We can't take out what we didn't bring with us into this life. I have to say I haven't read a lot of Poe, so I don't have a reference, but I enjoyed it none the less. Nicely done.

Very POEtic indeed. There is no crueler a death than that of the spirit by way of guilt and greed. Nicely assembled and told with clear homage to the best of the Victorian horror.  RM.
