Monster :In Closets and Underneath Beds

Listen to your children scream

From the safety of their beds

See the terror in their eyes

As they see things you can’t view

You try to give them comfort false

As they tell you that there are monsters

Living in the closet and underneath the bed

They plead with you to understand

That there’s something going to get them

If you leave

You tell them false truth

As your parents told you when you were small

There’s no such thing as monsters

Living in closets and underneath beds

You used to know the truth

Before you bought into the lie

That it was just your imagination

Running wild

You used to see the evil things

That hungered for your soul

Just close your eyes and count to five

Was the only weapon you were given

But I ask you

What happens when you get to six?

You hear the nightly news

Of children missing from their beds

No trace of foul play

No evidence of someone coming in

No one thinks to check the closets

Or underneath the beds

You wonder were they went

How is it they disappear?

Without a single trace?

Not once to wonder

If your child was right

That there are monsters in the closet and underneath the bed

You hear your child scream your name

Once more interrupt your beauty sleep

For some imaginary scare

But when you turn on the lights

All you see is an empty bed

And a half opened closet door

Too late you realize

You should have listened

Your child knew the truth

Now they’re gone

Beyond the closet door.

Just close your eyes and count to five

That’s all you gave your child

To fight the coming dark

All you have is yourself to blame

Not listening when you should

Too late you realize

You should have listened

Your child knew the truth

Now they’re gone

Beyond the closet door

Author's Notes:
I watched boogyman. it was an ok movie. It did however inspire me to write this. Seal your closets and check beneath your beds. Listen to what children have to say, they are wiser than we think.

As soon as I started reading this I thought of the film 'Boogeyman'.  Thinking perhaps your poem is better than the film.  I wasn't impressed with the film - especially with the ending but this is impressive. :o)

As children we were always more in tune with the Other Worlds. There is a children's book call Things That Go Bump in The Night. They do and kids know they are there. Great write, and never let your feet dangle over the edge of the bed. jp

Gave me the shivers all the way through even the the story line was I say...Fine write here PS!

My children have never experienced such...thank goodness!
But one of my sons did awake in torrors from deeper psyche monsters...ghosts maybe? and that scared me deeply...somehow more real than monsters under bed...glad he outgrew the talent~

All the best,
