Pondering Pelicans

In an inexpressive moment

They descended and sat motionless in the water.

Thousands of wings

silenced by an unexplained energy,

each bird facing the other like on a coat of arms;

Rustic browns, dull greys, pale whites,

against a bright, blue horizon,

on an ivory Sea.

Fishes seemed lacking,

no fishing boats wandering either.

I’ve seen them before….

but never in this magnitude,

for I swear they were summoned there

in their thousands.

What did they perceive that I didn’t

in those precocious minutes?

In that brief period of movelessness

where winds and waves were absent,

what did they know?

Then as if by a sixth sense

they all ascended and flew away….

Leaving me and my thoughts adrift….

Leaving an inquiring mind none the wiser…...

Author's Notes:
I stopped by the Sea for a few minutes on Father's Day.
....well they had me pondering actually......

nothing unusual happens by accident. We are spoken to by our Creator many, many times and yet we need to open our perception to the other reality to understand that divine connection.

What a truly wonderful revelation and gift was given to you my dear sister.

I saw it in my mind's eye as I read your poem and knew without a shadow of doubt this was a very special sight to uplift you.

What does a pelican mean to you? What message in the form of nature God sent you???

He knows you are closest to Him and your loved ones by the water. That is where He will speak to you always.

Into favs for me to be read and re-read.

You pondered it well, and so well is your visualisation too.

I enjoyed how you left this open ended at the conclusion.  The answer is not important, but the subtle glimpse of the poet is in this piece is.  Without it the retorical question loses its power.  Enjoyed the write!

Nicely done Sharon, the sea is my refuge as well. We don't have pelicans up here though, just gulls, Joe

This poem is a good reason of why I love your writing so much.

Simply wondeful!

Wonderful capturing of one of those mysteious moments in nature.

I have seen this before as well...and too found it poignant and awe inspiring...curious.
And it made me ponder as well :)

Beautifully portrayed, lovely images...I could smell the salt on the ocean (though you made no mention)...really brought me there.

Best wishes,
