Lotions, Potions, and Snake Oils

Lotions, Potions and Snake Oils

Fine lines and wrinkles
Overnight repair
Promises beauty
Avoiding despair
Plumping
Lifting
Restoring
Cleansed
Lotions and Potions
Snake Oils and blends
Costly endeavors
You're willing to spend
Paying for beauty
Your face now depends
Botox
Restiline
Just a nip
A few tucks
Get out your wallet
It's gonna cost ya
Big bucks
Lotions, potions
Snake oils and blends
Maintaning
Youthfulness
Seems not to end
Promises
Claiming
Astonishing results
Eventually
all members
of an evil
cosmetic cult
Lotions, potions
Snake oils and blends
An age-old
Industry with
no visible end
Author's Notes:
I work for one of the world's largest cosmetic companies. I see how aging and beauty impacts our lives every day.....the money willingly spent to maintain beauty is astounding. Yes, women have long been purchasers of cosmetics....but don't laugh men!
You are the newest marketing target.

A flurry of new product launches brought tremendous growth in 2004 for menís grooming products. Between 1999 and 2004, menís grooming value sales increased by 36%. Mass-market brands such as Axe body spray are attracting the interest of teenage boys and younger men, while premium products are gaining ground with older boomer males. Grooming products, previously seen as unmanly, have taken on greater importance to the boomer male and have become a daily necessity. Success for manufacturers relies heavily on convincing men that looking good is masculine by linking products with professional accomplishment and athleticism

Cindy- I shout a hearty amen to this work.  Somehow I think if we were  to chink through some of the "beauty" masks that cosmetics seem to create, we would have a great scenario for a horror scene.

Aging is a natural process and "beauty", truly, is in the eye of the beholder.  prevocative write.

Hey girlfriend...you have NO idea what tricks my eyes are doing after all that PINK!! wowza!

I'd like to suggest two things, that you reconsider your line breaks in this piece, the separations makes the poem choppy instead of fluid and is easily avoided. Your beats and rhyme are fine, but the line breaks detract a great deal from this poem.

May I suggest "evil" be taken out, firstly because it breaks the rhythm of the poem and (please note that this suggestion is just a personal thought and it is neither here nor there) I think the word "evil" here concludes something for the audience that may/can be challenged.

With all that said, I would like to say I have enjoyed this thoroughly, both the poem and the "about" section. I welcomed the fresh subject matter. You have exposed the market nicely. BRAVO!!

Dear Cindy-
I find this to be an amazing and in-depth view of what seems to drive society today-

Life used to be about who you are
Now people want to look like a superstar
They could help the world with the cash they spend
Guess they'd rather watch the end as it now descends
There are children starving across the planet
The fires are burning and of course we fan it
So what is it you see reflecting in the mirror

Take a hard look until the fog starts to clear-
Thank you for allowing my mind to click today-
Best Wishes to You and Yours~
Peace~
James

For so long now Women have been the gender that was targeted by the cosmetic companies advertisements, it has made many of them feel inadequate by saying they could not be beautiful unless they used their products; that is pure BULLS___T!!! Lol, your poem is a great sendup on how it has affected Women in general Cindy, but I must say, there is no make up or oil or face lift that can hide what is inside. If you have a great heart, that is all the beauty you need!!! As for them targeting Men,LOL, they won't get this man!!! Great work Cindy, it's good to see you writing again.      Henry
