Unwinnable race

Time weighs heavily on my mind
Mortality stalks, like a junkyard dog
So far I have led in this futile race
It is a contest that will end soon
The score won't be in my favor

Perhaps I will last longer than some
Run this race more adeptly
But the opponent has yet to be defeated
He has run this course countless times
Knows every trap and pitfall along the way

There are no odds for any victory
No chance for an upset in the making
I will not be the first one to the tape
This outcome has been preordained
The only goal is to last as long as I can

I started out at the rising of the sun
Running fastest until high noon
Expending energy for this day in the life
Soon it will be, the sun will be setting
A valiant race, the winner is, the Reaper

I heard poet Billy Collins say that all poetry is about death. We celebrate the beauty of a rose because it is dying. Carpe Diem my friend, for as long as there are days to seize. jp

None of us can escape him. We all have a time and a place. It is out of our hands Henry. Live life to the max. This is not a rehearsal

And such is Life ...
Very honest evaluation Henry; it drives home the fact that a finite number of days on this Earth are allotted to each of us, so live each as though it were your last so that there are no regrets when that last day runs out.

Whoa! We're feeling a little blue this morning??? Hey, you still have a lot of miles left in those tired feet, no more of this "Grim Reaper" stuff!
Actually, though, it's a GREAT write. But then, I always know when I see that you've posted a new one that I'm going to be impressed!
