portending leaves

little leaves why

do your cycle at my humble door

what is your  foretelling significance

as the nude trees shiver

circle the bare porch

with messages

what is written unfolding

in the edges and corners

of your swirling cursive…

language that has written long

in the open book of earth..

depths unspellable

it seems

to be something i should

be able to apprehend

as the stars descend

and begin the long march to daylight

as the mice clamor and scamper

in the walls like chanting monks

--it seems that the creatures

of this passing world

are writing

an invisible sonnet

in the booklet of my mind

will i finally understand

the ancient metaphor

that lights the sky

as sentences recede

from the facility of my speech

as the leaves rustle against

the door i have longed closed

in my bitterness and my lackless vision

fruits that have long remain out of the

circumference of my thumbs

my dim lantern in a bushel hide…

offers footholds…

robs the eyes of light…

steals good fruit…

replacing the empty space

between fingers

with wormy rotten apples.

Will you never speak to me again Andrew???
