The Simplest Thread
i sense that my grave
awaits me in the trees of tomorrow.
Waits on unseen paws in corners
in the corridors of seasons.
Most believe that death
is a raging beast
that waits to drag away
its struggling prey as every hour
its lurks with pads stealth
in doorways that only it can name.

Even the moon cannot find its tracks
across the darkness where it treads.
To me it is just a shadow--
a black kitten that is just playing
with the strings of my heart--
how it shall untangle me
into the simplest thread unwoven,
no matter what crafty
knots that i may attempt to tie
or how many ladders i may try
to lean against the sky..

One day i shall
smile beyond my flesh
and see vastness
beyond the power of my sight
as the burden of my cross
transforms into regions
that flutter beyond the limits of my mind.

As the grass forgets my path
and the woods forgets my voice
still in my simple acts of kindness
shall scamper beyond the yoke
the clay of my fruitless pride
and i shall find my true name
in the puzzle of my old one
and all may wash away
but still i shall remain
for it is intended
in the simplest thread
as an angel grasps
upon the other end...
