Goldfish in The Bathtub
My dad is a stoic
my mother is a zen Buddhist
my little sister is a bit surreal.
So that why you see
i am just a little confused
& that's why i swear that i can hear
goldfish swimming splashing their fins
in the lion footed bathtub upstairs.
Laughing like stars
these chanting fish
sing like electric suns in the constellation Aquarius
Andromeda likes to date things from the deep
with sweet voices
while in a different skies monkeys are fast asleep
Or maybe i am wrong
or just misspelled my lot
in the bundled knots of my memory.
Forgetting my $10 words
in that grand spelling bee of life.
i can never get a star by my name. . . . .
Just because of that invisible monkey
that lives in the tree by the window
has snuck into the house
turned off the faucet
& pulled out the plug in the drain
Smile monkey watching inverted liquid stream down
the pipes of the city.
Stream down living water
while goldfish gills
dance in the air & their eyes blow up like balloons.
Their fins become still after fluting
the floor with their scales
Their eyes become silent after waltzing around
sliding about on the damp green linoleum floor
& the gates to the soul deflate like marbles out of the circle.
& their lips have become blue
because when you drown in the air
your breath goes & your body sleeps
while your soul up in heaven paints by numbers in the house of the dead.
& from their opening mouths
echoes fish cries, fish words, fish screams
then little winged fishes wiggle in end stopping line
out of the jaws of the dead
this jazz tune kisses the souls in passage
while i sing sons of the dead for the still fish to fish god in the celestial bowl
upstairs in the rainbow mansion
of fish & the fisher
in everlasting wet tomorrow.
What can the prophet find inside the fortune cookie of his soul
& on the paper
after breaking it in two
The world finds
finely inscribed
"When you drown in the air
you can sing like an nude angel
in the shadow operas of the dead."
